What you are actually paying for

Every evening on this page sells the same sky, so the price differences come from everything around it: transport, food, how long you stay out, and how many people share the telescope. A session where you drive yourself to a car park in the park is the cheapest way in. A coach that collects you from a south-coast hotel, stops for dinner and brings you back late at night costs far more.

The evening booked on this site sits near the bottom of that range. It starts from $47, has 3,404 reviews averaging 4.68; drop out at least 24 hours before the start and you pay nothing. You can choose hotel pickup on the south coast, the VIP option, or drive yourself to the meeting point, and either way you get the sunset, a drink and 2.25 hours of guided stargazing.

Prices here are always starting prices from each listing, shown in your currency. Options such as hotel pickup or a private session can cost more than the figure on the card, and the figure shown when you check your date on the booking page is what decides. Use the numbers to compare like with like, then check your own date.

Sunset and stars with transport from the south

The most popular format is a half-night out: pickup in the afternoon, a sunset stop, then stargazing and the drive back. Our booked evening follows exactly that pattern, with a viewpoint at 1,400 m for the sunset and a glass of Cava, then a second viewpoint for the telescope. It is guided in English only, and the guides use a laser pointer and a 12-inch Dobsonian.

The most reviewed listing on this page, with 4,258 reviews and a 4.19 average, uses the same evening shape and also starts from $47. Its guides speak English, German, Dutch and Italian, and an optional dinner at a roadside restaurant can be added on the way up. Its listing states that professional photos are optional and not included.

A smaller alternative runs in minivans with up to 8 guests each, stopping at the Roques de García and watching the sunset from Mirador de Samara before 1.5 hours of stargazing. It also starts from $47, with 22 reviews averaging 4.84. Fewer reviews mean less certainty, but the format suits travelers who dislike big groups.

Mount Teide stargazing with dinner

If you would rather not hunt for a restaurant before a late night, several evenings build the meal in. The cheapest of them starts from $64 and serves a 3-course Canarian dinner at Restaurante 7 Cañadas, given at 2,130 m, before a sunset with Cava or orange juice and 1.5 hours of stargazing. It has 2,408 reviews averaging 4.52.

Mount Teide stargazing with dinner gets longer and pricier from there. One evening lasts 9 hours, collects guests from 51 pickup points, stops at a traditional village, and serves dinner at a restaurant inside the national park before an hour at the telescopes. It starts from $103 and averages 4.67 from 1,474 reviews.

Another dinner evening heads for Vilaflor instead, for a meal at Bodegas Reverón, given at 1,414 m, then 1 hour of guided stargazing in the park. It lasts 5 hours and starts from $95, though its average of 3.98 from 366 reviews is the lowest on this page. Dinner evenings shorten the time under the stars, so weigh the meal against the sky.

Short telescope sessions you drive to

The best value for keen observers is often a session without transport. You drive into the park yourself, meet the guide at a car park or a chapel, and spend the whole booking at the telescope. One such session meets next to the Ermita de las Nieves, starts 40 minutes after sunset and lasts 2 hours, with a Starlight-certified guide.

That session starts from $41 and averages 4.92 from 459 reviews. Another, at the same starting price, meets in front of Minas de San José for 80 minutes, with professional telescopes for viewing and a separate one used only to take astrophotos that are sent to you afterwards. A third pairs you with an astrophysicist and an 8-inch telescope at the Parador for 1.5 hours.

For the biggest instrument, one listing brings a 32-inch telescope to small groups of up to 12, for 3 hours from $57. Its meeting point depends on the wind and is sent as GPS coordinates. All of these need a car and a driver who is comfortable on mountain roads at night, which is the hidden cost of the cheapest options.

A private stargazing tour in Tenerife

Couples celebrating something, families with children who need their own pace, or photographers who want to linger often look for a private stargazing tour in Tenerife. None of the big group evenings is private, but several smaller operators offer it as an option on the same listing, so you compare the group price first and then ask for the private rate.

The large-telescope session lists private sessions alongside its small groups. The astrophysicist session runs group nights on Tuesdays and Fridays and private sessions on other days. A long sunset and stargazing evening with self-drive, transport and dinner options also lists private or small groups, with guides in English, Italian, German, Dutch, French and Spanish.

Private prices are not published as starting prices on these listings, so expect a quote that depends on group size and date. The benefit is control: you decide how long to stay at the telescope, which objects to look for and when to call it a night. Split between a larger group, a private session can cost less per head than you expect.

The top end: the cable car and the observatory

Two evenings sit well above the rest on price because they add access you cannot get on a normal night. The cable car evening, from $210, rides 8 minutes up to the upper station, given at 3,555 m, for the sunset, then serves a buffet or premium dinner before telescope time. People with heart problems and pregnant women may not take that ride.

The other premium choice spends the afternoon at the Teide Observatory, the IAC's site at Izaña, before a sunset and an evening at the telescopes. It lasts 8 hours with pickup included, starts from $126 and averages 4.45 from 127 reviews. Our guide to the observatory explains what you see there and when public visits are possible.

These are special-occasion evenings, and their averages are lower than those of the small telescope sessions. Book them for the cable car or the observatory itself, not because a higher price promises a better sky. The stars over Las Cañadas are the same for everyone on a clear night.

How to choose in five minutes

Start with transport. Without a car, your choice is between the pickup evenings, and the deciding factor is whether you want dinner included. With a car and a confident driver, the meet-in-the-park sessions give you more telescope time for less money, and you can arrive early for the sunset on your own.

Then look at the weather terms. Our booked evening may keep the group at its lower viewpoint if wind, cloud or cold make the upper one unsuitable. One large operator reschedules or refunds in full when the weather is unsuitable, while another runs even under cloud and offers only a new date for the astronomy part.

Finally, check the languages and age limits. Our evening is in English only and does not take children under 5 on the VIP option. Most other listings work in English and Spanish, and almost all of them, including ours, let you cancel without charge until 24 hours ahead.
